THE LYDNEY HOP

THE HOME OF FRIENDLY FEET

The Lydney Hop as a social dance actually didn't have it's beginnings at the Lydney town hall but in a village hall, at the time Gerry and Lyn were teaching at The Mackenzie hall in Brockweir. A couple of thier friends and students Ger and Carolyn Dunford organised a social dance in 2005 at the venue and at the end of the evening they said "well it's up to you to run it now". Although a lovely and friendly venue, there used to be some space problems for instance tables and chairs were put on the stage and the DJ was placed in the store cupboard (it's true folks).

When Gerry and Lyn got married on saturday 22nd September 2001,They had had a Swing and Jive evening with friends and family, and the dress code was 1940s / 1950s, The band playing that night were "Snake Hip Jake", where are they now? And the venue was Lydney town hall.  Gerry thought wouldn't it be great if we could have the odd social dance there.

It wasn't until 2005 That they were brave enough to run a dance and the band playing that night were The Jive Aces.

In 2006 there was more momentum and a dance was run and now a dance is run every other month with live music three times per year. The emphasis at Lydney town hall is to have various DJs and live bands at a reasonable price.

Gerry and Lyn also believe in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere in the spirit  of Lindy Hop in it's heyday at the Savoy ballroom in Harlem a ballroom where it became the first intergrated ballroom in America. Lydney town hall has that period ballroom feel which makes it special. And as a social centre it is coming alive as it should be. The town Hall is situated on the High street going towards the A48 to Chepstow.
